Photo of the day (7/3/08)

Flickr contributor Sgorainick submitted this photo for Gadling's photo of the day. "Volcanos in the Mist" was taken in Indonesia. You can still see some of the sulfur belching from Mount Bromo in the distance. I'm sure it didn't smell good, but who wouldn't put up with a little sulfur smell to get a shot like this?

Way to go Sgorainick!

What a New York City shot! At first, I thought, where is this place? And then, "Aha!"

Taken from a distance by Damon Green, this view of people waiting by a train track is an every day New York experience that is often lost in the busy shuffle of life there.

It's great to have time to see how these three men are sitting on this bench waiting. This reminds me a bit of the Edward Hopper painting "Nighthawks." It's the voyeuristic quality perhaps.

The lines and color tones of this shot are also exquisite. Well, done.

If you have shots that capture an experience where you are, please send our way at Gadling photo pool. It may be picked as Photo of the Day.

Today's photo of the day is dedicated to my friend Jarod, who I was supposed to visit in Shanghai this weekend. Unfortunately, I got tied up in a junket for work, so now Jarod has no drinking buddy for his first few weeks in China.

Submitter Willy Volk (why does that name sound familiar?) took this shot of stones engraved with the symbols for Destiny, Peace, Faith and Accomplishment in San Francisco's Chinatown. I wish Jarod all of the above in the real Shanghai.

Beautifully cropped! A shot of a hot air balloon in Istanbul by smallscreen. This is what they call big sky in Turkey, I guess.

I realize I am a little late with this Photo of the day, but it's still June 30 here on the West Coast.

Check out this great night shot of the Roman Forum by stevenduke. The Forum is one of the more surreal places you'll visit if you go to Rome, and I think stevenduke's photo really captures that feeling. The Forum is known as the historic heart of this Italian city - a collection of aging marble monuments that once represented the political center of the world's greatest empire. These same columns and stones that once echoed with the voices of great emperors and philosophers now stand silent - a magnificent yet mysterious reminder of what once was.

I get that same feeling of mystery when I look this photo. It looks like stevenduke used an extra long shutter to flood this night shot with some extra light, giving it a very dramatic yet lonely feeling to it. You almost feel as though the ghost of Augustus Caesar might be walking among the ruins below.

In many countries, travelers mean money, and to cash in on the tourism industry you have to know how to attract customers. This is particularly true in Beijing, where as the Olympics draw closer, more and more travelers flock to the city. Apparently this shop owner knows exactly what it takes with their humorous sign out front, as captured by Marni Rachel. I definitely want to go inside.

This photo, from RuthAnnOC, is an affront to those of us stuck in places without beaches, sailboats, and mindblowing sunsets-- places unlike Oahu, Hawaii, where this gorgeous picture was taken.

The winner of our photo of the day for today is from Dave and Chi who captured this display from the annual fireworks competition just outside of Paris in Chantilly. He calls it "Nuit de Feu - Yellow Sky"

Amazingly, our crew ALMOST went to this display on June 14th. I had plans to capture just this kind of picture. But I know that Dave and Chi probably did a much better job than I could. There's always next year, I guess. Now that I see his pictures, I really think we should have checked it out.

Congratulations Dave and Chi! They even blogged about the experience.

If you are on the way to Essaouria, Morocco and you need to find a toilet, no problem. Could this sign be any more travel friendly? This shot by mce323 interests me for other reasons as well. See the man and the child in the background? Plus, there's the coffee cup painted on the wall. What's that about?

If you notice, the pink building has a crack in it. There are so many details that catch my eye. I'm also drawn in by the multiple textures. Don't you know exactly how that wall would feel if you could reach in and touch it?

If you have an image of what you've seen in your travels, send it our way at Gadling's Flickr photo pool. It might be chosen as Photo of the Day.

I don't think that many people think of roughing it through Tajikistan when they think of "road tripping it". That's exactly why I love this picture, taken by uncorneredmarket in Gadling's photo pool. The perfect mixture of arid rough terrain, beautiful blue sky and a classic vehicle -- thundering down the dirt roads of Central Asia towards adventure unknown.
